Day seven august 30th
First day of shore leave today! After I finished polishing the compass
for open ship I was free to go on shore leave. To be granted shore leave you
have to be in a minimum group of four then you’re free to roam anywhere as long
as you can get back to the ship before curfew, which is 11:00. We went to tims
first and I managed to update facebook and start to update this blog until we
suddenly decided to go to starbucks instead for no reason I could think of, and
the internets worse, super laggy and annoying. Walked
allot today first to get internet and necessary tims :P then our detour to
starbucks and back to the ship for my watch at 3:00 pm. Since we were in port
and at the tall ships festival in Windsor we had an open ship along with two
other tall ships docked behind us. “The Pride of Baltimore” and “The Sea
Dragon” both very interesting ships, but much smaller than “Sorlandet”. For
watch I had to make sure people were going down the stairs from aft deck to main
deck backwards because the stairs are very steep. I also had to answer any
questions people had about the ship, program or myself a few people asked where
I was from its amazing how many people have connections in Manitoba! That day
we had 1600 people on the ship no one was allowed into the banjer only on
decks. Quite an amount of people to organize and speak to! The weather was
beautiful for it super hot which was great but we all got dehydrated luckily I
had my water bottle with me. After my watch shift was over we went to sa
screening of “hook” in the local opera/theatre house in Windsor. Then went back
to the ship and had a game of ultimate Frisbee which got rained out. The storm
was pretty spectacular lashing rain, booming thunder and, bright lightning.
Hopefully that wont be a regular occurrence I can imagine the sea wont be as
calm as the Windsor/Detroit harbor was…. On top of all this excitement I had
night watch at 2 that morning until 4 so didn’t get a very good nights sleep.
With all these action packed days I can still notice the little things though my
friend Trip and I watched the newest Star trek on deck on the night of our
arrival in Windsor. Midway through the movie I realized that Me and trip were
the only people in the world that can truthfully say that we have watched star
trek on the fore deck of a tall ship anchored in the middle of Detroit/Windsor
harbor which was probably the border too. A pretty cool statement in my books!
